Harlaxton College Turns to ntl:Telewest Business for Next Generation Network
- Enables faster connection for the British campus of the University of Evansville
- New system includes a comprehensive IP telephony solution
02 October 2008: ntl:Telewest Business, the supplier of communications services to the public and private sectors, today announced that it is to boost broadband speeds over a Next Generation Network (NGN) and provide an Internet Protocol Telephony (IPT) solution for Harlaxton College, the British campus of the University of Evansville, Indiana in the United States. Its state of the art technology and teaching resources make it one of the finest international study abroad campuses in the world.
Based in one of England’s finest country houses, the Grade 1 listed Harlaxton Manor in Lincolnshire, the college takes in over 300 students each academic year from the United States. Additionally over 1,000 people annually attend summer schools, short courses and conferences at Harlaxton College.
Harlaxton College looked to upgrade its telephony network and needed a comprehensive solution that was scalable to meet the growing number of students and visitors. Following a comprehensive tender process it selected ntl:Telewest Business for its NGN capabilities and expertise in the education sector.
Ian Welsh, Vice Principal for Business and Technology said: “We pride ourselves on the technology we use at the college and are always looking at ways to improve our ICT systems. The dedicated support and the can do attitude from the ntl:Telewest Business team really demonstrated their expertise. The team answered all our technical questions honestly and saw through the challenges to provide us with a workable solution. Of course price is always a key consideration, but the team’s commitment to providing us with a system that matched our needs is what really made the difference”
The college will own the IPT equipment, whilst the servicing will be managed by ntl:Telewest Business to ensure the smooth day to day running of the system and is part of a 3 to 5 year contract. In addition, ntl:Telewest Business also upgraded the college’s internet connection and installed the technology to boost bandwidth speeds when needed.
Paul Lawrence, Head of Sales for South West, Wales and Midlands at ntl:Telewest Business commented: “Our timescales were tight as we had to minimise disruption to the College and its students. We worked outside term time and ensured that the solution we put in place not only fitted the budget but was also robust enough to handle the increasing call traffic. We understand the crucial role communication plays in the education sector. Colleges need to have reliable systems and NGN powered internet in place to support students in today’s digital environment.”
