AVG’s Karel Obluk Appointed to Board of Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization

Published 26th August 2008

Newark, UK – 26th August, 2008 – Karel Obluk, Chief Technology Officer at AVG Technologies, a leading developer of internet security software, has been appointed to the initial board of the new Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization (AMTSO).

AMTSO was founded in Bilbao, Spain, in February 2008 as a result of industry-wide concern about an increasing disconnect between what anti-malware technologies actually do, and the testing methodologies used to evaluate them. As anti-malware solutions have become more complex, many traditional tests are no longer able to properly evaluate product effectiveness, resulting in product reviews that may be incomplete, inaccurate, or misleading.

“Anti-virus vendors have been unhappy with the quality of testing methodology for some time,” said Obluk. “So I’m very pleased to be involved at this level in the development of new testing methodologies that will deliver understandable, accurate, and above all objective results to help users determine product quality.”

AMTSO is focused on the global need for improvements in the objectivity, quality and relevance of testing methodologies. The organisation also aims to promulgate universally adopted standards and guidelines for anti-malware testing. Pursuant to its preliminary charter, AMTSO will:

• Provide a forum for discussions related to the testing of anti-malware and related products;
• Develop and publicise objective standards and best practices for testing of anti-malware and related products;
• Promote education and awareness of issues related to the testing of anti-malware and related products;
• Provide tools and resources to aid standards-based testing methodologies; and,
• Provide analysis and review of current and future testing of anti-malware and related products.
